Adopted in 1818, the flag features three horizontal bands of light blue and white with the Sun of May in the center. The sun represents the Inca sun god Inti and commemorates the appearance of the sun through clouds during the May Revolution of 1810.

The Sun of May has 32 rays, alternating between 16 straight and 16 wavy rays, and features a human face known as 'Sol de Mayo.'
