Burgenland

statesbicolorredgold

The flag of Burgenland is a horizontal bicolor of red over gold (yellow). The state coat of arms in the center features a red eagle on gold, standing on a rocky crag, reflecting the region's historic frontier character. The eagle holds a sabre and a small shield bearing the arms of the Esterházy family, who were the dominant noble house in this territory for centuries. Burgenland was the last Austrian state to be created, transferred from Hungary to Austria in 1921 following the Treaty of Trianon.

Burgenland is home to the Neusiedler See, Central Europe's second-largest steppe lake, which is so shallow (average depth 1.1 meters) that it has completely dried up multiple times in recorded history.
