The flag of Styria is a horizontal bicolor of white over green. The state coat of arms features a silver (white) panther on a green field, breathing fire from its mouth and ears. This distinctive heraldic panther, known as the Steirischer Panther, has been the symbol of Styria since the 12th century under the Ottokar dynasty. Unlike natural panthers, the heraldic version is depicted as a horned, fire-breathing creature with the body of a large cat. The white and green colors directly derive from the tinctures of the arms.
Styria produces over 80% of Austria's pumpkin seed oil (Kürbiskernöl), a dark green specialty oil with a distinctive nutty flavor that is protected by EU geographical indication status.
