Queensland
australiaaustraliastateblue ensign
The flag of Queensland is a British blue ensign with the state badge on the fly side. The badge consists of a light blue Maltese cross on a white disc, with a royal crown at the centre of the cross. The Maltese cross was chosen to represent the state, and the crown honours Queen Victoria, after whom Queensland was named upon its separation from New South Wales in 1859.
Queensland's badge originally featured a different design; the blue Maltese cross was chosen after the colony's agent in London selected it, though the exact reason for choosing a Maltese cross remains historically unclear.
Adopted: 1876
