North Macedonia

The flag of North Macedonia features a golden-yellow sun with eight broadening rays extending to the edges of a red field. The sun design, known as the 'new sun of liberty,' was adopted in 1995 after a dispute with Greece over the previous use of the Vergina Sun symbol. The red and yellow colors are traditional Macedonian heraldic colors.
North Macedonia had to change its original flag in 1995 because Greece objected to its use of the Vergina Sun, an ancient Macedonian symbol that Greece claimed as its own heritage.
Adopted: 1995
