Adopted in 1971 before independence in 1975, the flag of Papua New Guinea is divided diagonally from upper hoist to lower fly. The upper triangle is red with a golden Raggiana bird-of-paradise in flight, and the lower triangle is black with five white stars forming the Southern Cross constellation.
The flag was designed by a 15-year-old art student named Susan Karike, who won a nationwide competition to create the new national flag.
Adopted: 1971
