Adopted in 1954. The light blue field was originally chosen to match the United Nations flag in gratitude for UN support. The white five-pointed star represents the five regions where Somali people historically live.
The five points of Somalia's star represent the five regions inhabited by Somalis: Italian Somaliland, British Somaliland, French Somaliland, the Ogaden, and the Northern Frontier District.
