Adopted in 1975 at independence from the Netherlands, the flag features five horizontal stripes of green, white, red, white, and green with a large yellow star in the center. The star represents unity and a golden future, while green symbolizes fertility and red the progress and love of the people.
The yellow star in the center represents the unity of all ethnic groups in Suriname, one of the most ethnically diverse countries in South America.
