The Staffordshire flag features a gold field with a red cross and the Staffordshire Knot in the centre. The Staffordshire Knot is a distinctive three-looped knot that has been the county's emblem since medieval times, originally associated with the Stafford family.
The Staffordshire Knot is said to derive from a hanging knot used by a medieval Sheriff of Staffordshire who could execute three criminals at once.
