statesbicolorredwhite

The flag of Salzburg is a horizontal bicolor of red over white. The state coat of arms features a golden lion rampant on a red field in the first quarter, representing the former Prince-Archbishopric, and a red fess on gold in the fourth quarter. The red and white colors have deep roots in the region's ecclesiastical history, as Salzburg was an independent Prince-Archbishopric within the Holy Roman Empire for nearly a millennium until its secularization in 1803. The lion symbolizes the archbishops' temporal power.

The Salzburg Festival, founded in 1920, is one of the world's most prestigious classical music and drama festivals, attracting over 250,000 visitors each summer to the city where Mozart was born.
