Adopted in 1984 when Upper Volta was renamed Burkina Faso under Thomas Sankara. The red symbolizes revolution, the green represents agriculture, and the yellow star stands for the guiding light of revolution.
The previous flag of Upper Volta had black, white, and red stripes; the new flag was part of Sankara's revolutionary rebranding of the country.
