Adopted in 1957 when Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence. The red represents the blood of independence, the gold symbolizes mineral wealth, and the green stands for forests. The black star is the lodestar of African freedom.
Ghana's black star inspired the name of the national football team, the Black Stars, and appears on many other African flags.
