Ontario

canadacanadaprovincered ensign

A red ensign flag with the Union Jack in the upper left canton and the provincial shield on the right side. The shield features the red St. George's Cross on the upper portion and three golden maple leaves on a green background on the lower portion, representing Canada's national symbol and Ontario's lush forests.

Ontario adopted its red ensign flag partly in response to Canada replacing its Red Ensign with the new Maple Leaf flag in 1965. Ontario's premier wanted to preserve the Union Jack connection, making the provincial flag a deliberate act of political symbolism.

Adopted: 1965
