Appenzell Innerrhoden

The flag of Appenzell Innerrhoden features a black bear standing upright (rampant) on a white field, similar to Ausserrhoden but without the flanking letters. Instead, the bear is sometimes shown with red claws and tongue. This simpler design reflects Innerrhoden's claim as the original Appenzell, retaining the unmodified bear emblem from the Abbey of St. Gall's heraldry.
Appenzell Innerrhoden still holds the Landsgemeinde, an open-air democratic assembly where citizens gather annually in the town square to vote on laws by show of hands.
