Adopted in 1978 at independence, the flag features a green background with a cross of yellow, black, and white stripes. In the center is a red disc bearing a Sisserou parrot, the national bird, surrounded by ten green stars representing the country's parishes.
Dominica is one of only two nations in the world whose flag features the color purple, due to the Sisserou parrot's plumage.
