Lazio
regionsbluecoat of armsoctagonal
The flag of Lazio features the regional coat of arms on a light blue field. The emblem is an octagonal shape containing a stylized representation of the region. As the region containing Rome, Italy's capital and the seat of the ancient Roman Empire, Lazio holds enormous historical significance. The blue field connects to both the region's Tyrrhenian coastline and the traditional blue of the Italian Republic (the azzurro savoia). The flag is a modern administrative symbol for one of the world's most historically important territories.
Lazio contains an entire independent country within its borders — Vatican City, the world's smallest sovereign state at just 0.44 square kilometers, is entirely surrounded by the city of Rome.
