Liguria

regionscoat of armsshipmaritime

The flag of Liguria displays the regional coat of arms on a white field. The emblem features a historic sailing vessel — a caravel or galley — on a blue sea, crowned above, reflecting Liguria's deep maritime heritage. As the home of Genoa, one of the great Mediterranean maritime republics, the region's identity is inseparable from seafaring. The ship evokes the Republic of Genoa's centuries of dominance in Mediterranean trade and exploration, including its most famous native son, Christopher Columbus.

Liguria is home to the Cinque Terre — five colorful cliffside fishing villages connected by ancient footpaths — and is also where pesto alla genovese was invented, using the local basil that thrives in the mild coastal climate.
