Marche
regionscoat of armswhitegreen
The flag of Marche displays the regional coat of arms on a white field. The emblem features a stylized green woodpecker on a white shield, bordered by a decorative frame. The woodpecker references the Piceni, the ancient Italic people who inhabited the region — their name derives from 'picus,' the Latin word for woodpecker, which was their sacred totem animal. This connection to pre-Roman antiquity gives the Marche flag a uniquely ancient symbolism among Italian regional flags.
Marche is the birthplace of the Renaissance master Raphael (born in Urbino in 1483) and of the opera composer Gioachino Rossini (born in Pesaro in 1792).
