Adopted in 1963 upon independence. The black represents the people, the red symbolizes blood shed for freedom, the green represents the landscape, and the white stripes stand for peace. The Maasai shield and spears represent defense of freedom.
Kenya's flag is based on the flag of the Kenya African National Union (KANU) party that led the country to independence.
