Adopted in 1971, the flag has three horizontal stripes of blue and white, derived from the flag of the former Federal Republic of Central America. The coat of arms in the center features a triangle with five volcanoes, a rainbow, and a liberty cap.
Nicaragua's flag and Israel's flag are often cited as the only two national flags that include the color purple, which appears in the rainbow on Nicaragua's coat of arms.
