Adopted in 1871, the flag has three vertical stripes of light blue and white. The coat of arms in the center features the quetzal bird (a symbol of liberty), crossed rifles, a wreath, and a scroll bearing the date of Central American independence.

The quetzal bird on the coat of arms is said to die in captivity, making it a powerful symbol of freedom.
