The Norwegian flag features a dark blue Nordic cross outlined in white on a red background. The design combines the red background of Denmark (Norway's former ruler) with the blue cross symbolizing union with Sweden and the white referencing the path to independence. The flag was designed in 1821 by Fredrik Meltzer.
The Norwegian flag contains within it the designs of six other national flags: France, Netherlands, Thailand, Indonesia, Poland, and Finland, if you look at different rectangular sections.
