Adopted in 1902, the New Zealand flag features a dark blue background with the Union Jack in the canton and four red five-pointed stars with white borders on the fly side, representing the Southern Cross constellation. Unlike Australia's version, New Zealand's Southern Cross uses only four stars and they are red with white edges.
New Zealand held a two-stage referendum in 2015-2016 to potentially replace the flag, but voters chose to keep the current design over a silver fern alternative.
