The UNESCO flag features the UN's light blue background with a white emblem depicting a Greek temple facade, representing education and culture, set within the UN laurel wreath. The temple design evokes the Parthenon and symbolises the organisation's commitment to preserving cultural heritage and promoting education worldwide.
UNESCO maintains the World Heritage List, which includes over 1,100 natural and cultural sites across 167 countries. The first sites were inscribed in 1978, including the Galapagos Islands and the city of Quito.
