United Nations
internationalblueglobewreath
The UN flag features a white world map in an azimuthal equidistant projection, centred on the North Pole, surrounded by two olive branches on a light blue background. The map projection shows all continents visible and equidistant from the centre. The olive branches symbolise peace, and the blue background represents the hope for a peaceful world.
The original UN flag design was created for the 1945 San Francisco Conference and initially used a map centred on the United States before being rotated to centre on the North Pole for neutrality.
Adopted: 1946
