Adopted in 1825, the flag features three vertical stripes of red, white, and red. Legend says José de San Martín was inspired by the colors of flamingos he saw upon arriving in Peru. The state flag includes the coat of arms with a vicuña, cinchona tree, and cornucopia.
One legend claims San Martín chose the red and white after seeing flamingos fly over his troops, though historians debate this origin story.
