north americavertical tricoloreaglecoat of arms

Adopted in 1968 in its current form, the flag features three vertical stripes of green, white, and red with the national coat of arms centered on the white stripe. The emblem depicts an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent, from an Aztec legend.

The coat of arms is based on the Aztec legend of the founding of Tenochtitlan, where the gods told the Mexica people to build their city where they saw an eagle eating a snake atop a cactus.
