The flag of Gulf Province features symbols representing the vast delta and coastal lowlands that define this province. Gulf Province stretches along the Gulf of Papua and encompasses enormous river deltas, mangrove swamps, and lowland rainforests. The province is sparsely populated relative to its large size and is home to diverse ethnic groups who have traditionally lived by fishing and sago harvesting. Kerema is the provincial capital.

Gulf Province's Purari River delta is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere, creating a vast maze of channels and mangrove forests.
