The flag of Northern Province (also known as Oro Province) features symbols representing the culture and landscape of this northeastern coastal province. The province encompasses the dramatic coastline around Oro Bay and extends inland through dense rainforest to the Owen Stanley Range. Northern Province was the site of intense World War II fighting, including the battles of Buna, Gona, and Sanananda. The Orokaiva people are the main ethnic group.
Northern Province's tapa cloth, made from beaten bark and painted with geometric designs, is considered among the finest in the Pacific.
