Sandaun

provincesremoteborderriver

The flag of Sandaun Province (formerly West Sepik) features traditional motifs from this remote western border province. Sandaun means 'sunset' in Tok Pisin, referring to its position as the westernmost province. The province borders Indonesian Papua and is one of the most remote and least developed areas in the country. The upper Sepik River flows through dense rainforest here, and the province is home to diverse ethnic groups maintaining strong traditional lifestyles.

Sandaun is one of the least accessible provinces in PNG, with many communities reachable only by river or small aircraft, and some villages having almost no contact with the outside world.
