Buryatia

republicstricolorbluewhite

The flag of Buryatia features three horizontal stripes of blue, white, and yellow, with the traditional Buryat soyombo symbol in the upper-left corner on the blue stripe. The soyombo is an ancient symbol consisting of a flame, sun, and crescent moon, representing eternal life, prosperity, and renewal. Blue represents the sky and Lake Baikal, white symbolizes purity and the Siberian snows, and yellow-gold represents freedom and the steppe grasslands. Buryatia surrounds much of Lake Baikal, the world's deepest and oldest freshwater lake.

Buryatia is home to the Ivolginsky Datsan, the center of Russian Buddhism, and the preserved body of Lama Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov, who has remained in a meditative posture since 1927.
