North Ossetia-Alania
republicswhiteredyellow
The flag of North Ossetia-Alania is a horizontal tricolor of white, red, and yellow. White represents moral purity and the snow-capped Caucasus mountains, red symbolizes military valor and the bravery of the Ossetian people, and yellow represents prosperity, abundance, and the golden wheat fields of the plains. The Ossetians are descendants of the ancient Alans, an Iranian-speaking nomadic people, and 'Alania' was added to the republic's name in honor of this heritage. The flag's simplicity and bold primary colors give it a strong visual impact.
The Ossetians are the only predominantly Christian people in the North Caucasus and are descendants of the Alans, the same warrior people who invaded the Roman Empire.
Adopted: 1994
