Jönköping

countieslionquarteredsword

The coat of arms of Jönköping County is quartered, combining the arms of its constituent provinces. The first and fourth quarters display a golden lion rampant on a red field for Småland, one of Sweden's most important historic provinces. The second and third quarters show a blue-clad arm holding a sword on a red field for Östbo and Västbo hundreds. The Småland lion is one of Sweden's most recognized provincial symbols, representing the fierce independence of the Småland people throughout Swedish history.

Jönköping was historically known as 'Sweden's Jerusalem' due to the extraordinary concentration of free churches and religious movements that flourished there in the 19th century.
