Adopted in 1960 upon independence. The five stripes represent the five regions of Togo, the green symbolizes agriculture, and the yellow stands for mineral wealth. The red canton with a white star represents loyalty and patriotism.
Togo's flag was designed by art student Paul Ahyi, who went on to become one of Africa's most renowned artists and sculptors.
