The flag of Guernsey is a white St George's Cross with a gold Norman cross within it. The gold cross was added in 1985 to distinguish Guernsey's flag from England's. The golden cross represents William the Conqueror's banner, said to have been given by Pope Alexander II before the Norman Conquest.
The gold cross on Guernsey's flag represents the cross carried by William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, symbolizing the island's Norman heritage.
