South Australia
australiaaustraliastateblue ensign
The flag of South Australia is a British blue ensign with the state badge on the fly side. The badge features a piping shrike, also known as the Murray magpie, depicted with wings outstretched standing on a branch, set against a golden or yellow disc. The piping shrike was chosen as the state's bird emblem and represents the unique wildlife of South Australia.
The piping shrike on the flag is not actually a real species name but a colloquial term for the white-backed magpie, and the bird has appeared on South Australia's coat of arms since 1936.
