Adopted in 1966 at independence, the flag has two ultramarine blue stripes representing the sea and sky, separated by a gold stripe for the sand. The broken trident head in the center symbolizes the break from colonial rule.

The trident is deliberately broken to symbolize the break from British colonial rule, as the full trident appeared in the old colonial badge.
