Adopted at independence in 1981, the flag features a rising sun symbolizing a new era, set against a black background representing the African heritage of the people. The red symbolizes energy and the blue represents hope, while the V-shape stands for victory.
The flag was designed by a nationally held competition won by Reginald Samuel, a high school art teacher.
