Adopted in 1983 at independence, the flag features a green upper triangle and red lower triangle separated by a black diagonal band edged in yellow bearing two white stars. The colors represent fertility, the struggle against colonialism, African heritage, and sunshine.
The two stars represent hope and liberty, and the flag was chosen from over 250 entries in a national competition.
