East Flanders

The flag of East Flanders displays a black lion rampant with red claws and tongue on a golden-yellow field. This is the famous Flemish Lion (Vlaamse Leeuw), one of the oldest heraldic charges in European heraldry, dating to the counts of Flanders in the 12th century. The black-on-gold color scheme is shared across Flemish territories, but East Flanders' version maintains the classic form without additional charges or modifications.
Ghent, the capital of East Flanders, hosts the Gentse Feesten β one of Europe's largest cultural festivals, attracting over 1.5 million visitors across ten days each July.
