Uri
cantonsanimalbullheraldic
The flag of Uri displays a black aurochs (wild bull) head with a red tongue and a gold nose ring on a yellow (gold) background. The aurochs is a canting symbol, as the canton's name 'Uri' resembles the German word 'Ur' meaning aurochs. This powerful heraldic charge has represented the canton since the 13th century and symbolizes the strength of the Alpine community.
Uri is one of the three original cantons that formed the Swiss Confederation in 1291, and the legendary William Tell is said to have come from this canton.
