Limburg

provinceslionheraldicred

The flag of Limburg province features a red lion rampant with blue claws and tongue on a silver (white) field, derived from the arms of the medieval Duchy of Limburg. The lion is crowned with a golden crown. This heraldic charge dates to the dukes who ruled the territory in the High Middle Ages. The red-on-white scheme distinguishes it from both the Flemish and Brabant lions, creating a unique identity for Belgium's easternmost Flemish province.

Belgian Limburg was once home to major coal mines, and the region's transformation after the mines closed in the 1990s has made it a case study in economic reinvention.
