Adopted in 1959, abandoned during the Marxist era, and restored in 1990. The green represents hope, yellow stands for wealth, and red symbolizes the courage of ancestors. The design uses pan-African colours.
Benin briefly replaced this flag with a plain green flag with a red star during its period as a Marxist state from 1975 to 1990.
