Adopted in 1961. The green represents nature and agriculture, the gold symbolizes purity and mineral wealth, and the red stands for the blood shed for independence. The vertical tricolour design reflects French colonial influence.
Mali's original 1959 flag included a black kanaga figure, which was removed in 1961 to accommodate Islamic concerns about depicting the human form.
