Adopted in 1889 after the establishment of the republic, the flag features a green field with a large yellow diamond and a dark blue globe with white stars and a curved white banner. The banner reads 'Ordem e Progresso' (Order and Progress), inspired by positivism.
The stars on the globe represent the night sky over Rio de Janeiro on November 15, 1889, the date Brazil became a republic, and each star corresponds to one of the 26 states plus the Federal District.
Adopted: 1889
