The flag of China is red with five golden stars in the upper-left corner. The large star represents the Communist Party of China, while the four smaller stars represent the four social classes as defined by Mao Zedong. Red symbolizes the communist revolution and the blood of martyrs.
The flag was designed by Zeng Liansong, an economist from Zhejiang, whose design was selected from nearly 3,000 entries in a nationwide competition.
Adopted: 1949
