Goiás
statesstripesstarscanton
The flag of Goiás consists of five horizontal stripes alternating green and yellow, with a blue rectangle in the upper-left canton containing five white stars arranged in a pattern. The green and yellow stripes reflect Brazil's national colors, while the blue canton with stars mirrors the Brazilian national flag motif. The five stars represent the constellation of the Southern Cross, a key symbol of Brazil. The striped design gives the flag a clean, orderly appearance.
Goiás was carved in two when the Federal District was created within its territory in 1960, and later lost more land when the state of Tocantins was separated from its northern half in 1988.
Adopted: 1919
