Nova Scotia
canadacanadaprovincesaltire
The flag displays a blue St. Andrew's cross (saltire) on a white background, which is essentially a colour-reversed version of Scotland's flag. In the center sits the Royal Arms of Scotland: a red lion rampant on a gold shield, surrounded by a royal tressure. This reflects Nova Scotia's name, which means 'New Scotland' in Latin.
Nova Scotia's flag is the oldest provincial flag in Canada and one of the oldest flags in the Commonwealth, having been granted by King Charles I in 1625. It is a deliberate inversion of Scotland's flag to represent 'New Scotland.'
Adopted: 1858
