The Cook Islands flag features a blue ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and a ring of fifteen white five-pointed stars on the fly. The fifteen stars represent the fifteen islands that make up the Cook Islands. The blue background symbolises the vast Pacific Ocean.
The Cook Islands are named after Captain James Cook, who sighted them in 1770. Despite having a total land area of only 240 km², the islands' exclusive economic zone covers 1.8 million km² of Pacific Ocean.
