European Union
internationalbluestarscircle
The EU flag displays a circle of twelve golden five-pointed stars on a blue background. The number twelve was chosen as a symbol of completeness, unity, and perfection rather than representing the number of member states. The circle represents solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe.
The twelve stars do not represent twelve countries. The number was fixed at twelve because it traditionally symbolises completeness, inspired by clocks, months of the year, and other cultural references.
Adopted: 1955
